Insufficient funds will strangle a new church from the beginning and cause immense stress to you and your family. Attention should be given to adequately fund a church plant for it to be healthy and long-lasting.   

1. The involvement of the reproducing church
  • The parent church should want to take full responsibility for their new "baby." 
  • The reproducing church should count the cost and be willing to take care of most expenses

2. Support from other churches 
  • Aim for full support so you can devote your full attention to the new work
  • Times have changed, and most communities are now full of people with little or no church background. In addition, most families now have multiple financial, marital, and social issues. You need to devote your full time to reach an area effectively.
  • You should go into the church plant with full support but have a reduction of 20% each year over a five-year term. This will give you time to establish the work but still keep you focused as the reduction will happen each year.  

3. Set up for long-term
  • Have all outside support checks payable to the church instead of to yourself.  Draw one paycheck from the church. This will help you personally establish credit, show proof of employment, and clarify your taxes. 
  • Set a realistic personal budget
  • Set a church budget
  • Have a full budget even if some categories are blank. This will show the new congregation what needs to be filled in later, what are priorities, and how to take care of their pastor.
  • Don’t separate support from tithes and offerings. Teach the people to pick up the slack when support drops.
  • Show and keep everyone aware of decreasing support so that they can feel the burden
  • Have positive cash flow each month and include a land/ building fund. Banks need to see that you can handle payments in order to lend you money.

4. Establish faithful men from the beginning
  • Meet personally and cooperatively with the men on a regular basis  
  • The reproducing pastor, or another credible pastor, can speak at an annual men’s meeting
  • He can teach the men to be faithful in prayer, attendance, etc.… 
  • He can emphasize the tithe, missions, and offerings
  • He can talk about supporting the pastor and family financially
  • He can talk about the need to protect and care for the pastor
  • Use a biblical-based program to teach the church about being good stewards 
  • Have an annual mission’s conference 

5 The need to handle the funds with accountability
  • If at all possible, never handle the money
  • Have the offering counted by two adults and deposited in a locked bag
  • Someone from another church close by can travel over to help with this
